Proposal
For my Specialist Practise Unit I intend to take on a role that has been created to tailor my unique aims and learning outcomes for the term. I am taking on the title of “Technical Supervisor” for all the AUCB productions produced this term. This job entails producing the technical construction drawings for Top Girls, A Soldiers Tale and In Extremis in the AutoCAD to a professional level that we will use to build the sets from.
I will use my experience from my placement in the 3D Digital Drawing and Design department at the National Theatre that I undertook as part of my second year. I understand that as it is something that has never been done before that I will be working mostly independently on these drawings, but needing to collaborate with various Designers, Production Managers and Set Builders. I will also need to research construction techniques, costing and budgeting.
My drawings will be created digitally in AutoCAD, as this is the programme used in industry and we will be using these drawings to build the sets for In Extremis and A Soldier’s Tale. I will be working with Set Builder and Project Manager for Helix 3D, Richard McCabe to learn construction methods and build these sets with him on AUCB premises.
I chose taking on a role like this because it is a new challenge, it is something new to the department and I feel that taking on this unique role will make me more employable in industry as a draughtsman, designer and set builder. It will also aid me in becoming a better designer as I will understand the workings behind the design, how sets are constructed and budgeting in building materials and labour. Also how a design transforms from 2D to 3D and the various processes used to make this happen.
Aims
A1 To negotiate a body of work within the context of the brief through a learning agreement which demonstrates effective work planning, time and resource management
A2 To further develop intellectual reasoning and practical research to an increasingly advanced level of attainment
A3 To encourage in-depth learning through a high degree of independent judgement and increased critical thinking
A4 To develop a professional level of communication through the visual creative and technical realisation of your project
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit you will be able to:
LO1 Demonstrate the ability to negotiate an appropriate body of work, formulise a work plan and manage time and resources effectively
LO2 Demonstrate the initiation and creative application of intellectual reasoning and practical research to a high level of attainment
LO3 Inform project solutions with appropriate understanding, a high degree of independent judgement and demonstrate critical self-awareness
LO4 Demonstrate a professional level of project realisation, communication and presentation
Assessment Requirements
I will be handing in the seating configurations for Top Girls created digitally in AutoCAD and the technical construction drawings for In Extremis and A Soldier’s Tale. I will be building the sets for A Soldier’s Tale and In Extremis so I will produce a Construction Journal for In Extremis and A Soldier’s Tale available digitally on my blog. Also on my blog will be a diarised reflective workbook together with an appropriate verbal and written evaluation.
